This book is the third in a series of publications documenting the Irish immigrants who settled in the South. This book provides information on those of Irish nativity and their families who settled in this twenty-one county area in Western Tennessee from 1850 through 1900.
This new 844 page case bound publication, which cites data from the Federal Census Records, is an important genealogical research tool for the following reasons:
- Of those enumerated, there are over 5,900 families and more than 1,800 individuals reporting Irish nativity. The individuals are located in schools, hospitals, jails, poor houses, hotels, railroad gangs, asylums, boarding houses and orphanages.
- The spelling of names occasionally varies among census years and this book follows the families no matter how the spelling deviates.
- This work follows the families even if they relocated to another county or counties in this same area.
- The birth places of spouses and children allow for further research in other counties, states or countries. Some family members were born in Ohio, Iowa, Michigan, New York, New Hampshire, Canada, Spain, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and of course Ireland and Tennessee as well as many other locations.
- When reported, personal and real estate values are cited, so that other property records such as deeds and tax lists may be searched for further information.
- The years of Immigration and Naturalization are included when recorded.
- A full name index also includes the places of birth if other than Ireland and Tennessee for all family members.
