The microfilmed Original Pension Applications contained not only the veterans’ military history, but also copies of personal letters, paroles, oaths of allegiance, furloughs, dependents, discharge papers, occasionally commitment papers and finally, the reason for applying for a pension. The widows’ files contain her husband’s military papers and death date. Proof of the marriage was required for receiving a pension.
